Psychological assessment uses a combination of techniques (including clinical interviewing and assessment tools) to help assess a person’s capabilities and personality.
Psychologists are the only professionals that are expertly trained to perform and interpret psychological tests. Psychologists use clinically objective and standardised measures to assist in the assessment of clients. They are highly trained and experienced in writing psychological reports that are appropriate for the intended audience.
Cognitive assessment often called intelligence quotient (IQ) testing, is used to determine someone’s general thinking and reasoning abilities. Cognitive assessments can evaluate several domains of ‘cognitive capacity, these domains are:
- Verbal comprehension: understanding verbal information, thinking in words and expressing thoughts in words
- Perceptual reasoning: ability to organise and reason with visual information, and to solve visual problems
- Working memory: ability to retain and manipulate verbal information
- Processing speed: ability to scan, identify and process information accurately.
